Happiness is letting every situation be what it is, instead of what you think it should be.
I came across this quote on my phone from 2017. Just a few months before I was about to leave the relationship I was in that held me back and put me down, and finally be set free.
That quote probably meant so much to me in that moment. I was finding the inner strength to walk away from that relationship. I was trying to start a new life for myself. But for so long, I held myself back, because I had an image in my head of what my life should be like, and by me walking away, I was relinquishing control of what my life could have been. What I realized, though, is that by letting things happen how they should, rather than how I wanted, was that everything was going to work out even better than I expected.
The real happiness occurs when we can fully let go of what our expectations are and when we can just trust the plan for our lives. Happiness comes when we encourage ourselves to show up every day, to the best of our ability, and knowing that all we gave, was enough, to help get us to where we are supposed to be.
Back then, that quote was a reminder to me to just trust my gut, and start fresh, and that by doing so, I could find happiness. Now that quote means that, and much more. For me, letting go and trusting has been more than just finding happiness, it has been about finally feeling at peace. We can’t change our pasts, and we can’t control our future, but when we can let go, and let the moment and the journey happen how it is supposed, we can take the effort we would have spent worrying about what comes next, and instead put that energy into nurturing ourselves, filling ourselves with self-love and continuously growing.
Letting go is difficult. But if you always held on and tried to control, you would never truly experience all that life has to offer you. My life would have been incredibly different, had I stayed in a relationship that put me down, simply because I was trying to control my future.
Letting go got me to where I am today. Letting go was strange and tiring and confusing. But it was beautiful and enlightening and empowering. Because it helped me to see that I didn’t have to be held back by the wall I had put up for myself, but that I could set myself free into a new life, a life better than I had ever dreamed.
Happiness comes when we can let go and trust the universe. You can do it, it will be difficult, but it will be beautiful, and you, my darling, will grow. Let go and trust what is rather than what should be. One day you’ll look back and be grateful that you did.
