Starting Conversations, Honoring Memories, and Taking the Plunge

This Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, I decided to do more than just reflect—I wanted to start conversations. Losing friends to suicide in 2015 and 2022 has stayed with me, and I wanted to honor their memories in a meaningful way.
One way I chose to do this was by participating in the 1N5 Ice Out Stigma Challenge—a cold plunge following a 22-minute infrared sauna. At first glance, it’s just cold water. But the moment I stepped in, I realized it was so much more. It became a powerful reminder of the emotional challenges people face every day and the courage it takes to confront them. Using meditative breathing and focusing my mind, I was able to face the discomfort, and in doing so, I felt connected to the deeper purpose: starting conversations about mental health.
This month, I’m deciding to do more—share more, speak more, and take action. Participating in activities that spark dialogue and awareness is my way of honoring my friends and, hopefully, making a difference. Every conversation, every act, could be the reason someone feels seen, supported, or encouraged to reach out.
Suicide prevention isn’t just a month—it’s a commitment to listen, speak, and act. This month, I’ve chosen to take the plunge, start the conversations, and honor the memories of those I’ve lost. If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out—let’s talk, listen, and support each other. Your conversation or encouragement could truly make a difference.
