Talk.  They Hear You.

Talk. They Hear You. is a national initiative designed to help adults start important conversations with children about underage drinking and substance use. Developed by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the campaign provides tools, resources, and practical guidance to empower adults to have open, ongoing discussions that can shape healthy decision-making. By starting these conversations early and often, parents, caregivers, and educators can help prevent substance use before it starts and support children in making safe, informed choices.

How Substance Use Impacts Mental Health

Substance use and mental health are deeply connected. Young people who struggle with stress, trauma, anxiety, depression, or other mental illnesses may turn to alcohol or other drugs as a way to cope. But, substance use can actually worsen mental health challenges. Alcohol and other drugs can interfere with brain development, increase the risk of mood disorders, and make it harder for youth to develop healthy coping skills.

By fostering open conversations and providing support, adults can help young people manage their emotions in positive ways, reducing the likelihood of turning to substances as an escape.
