If you’re not a naturally trusting person, allowing yourself to trust others can be a difficult process.
For a very long time, I was the type of person that put up barriers and couldn’t let anyone in for fear that they’d let me down. I had a hard time believing people when they told me their intentions, and I would automatically assume the worst.
In my mind, not letting anyone in meant never getting hurt. In reality, though, I was pushing people away without knowing it. Then, I’d feel sad when I didn’t have the types of friendships or relationships I saw others having. I’d wonder, “why don’t I feel that close with anyone?” Now, of course, I realize it’s because I never really trusted anyone.
Learning to trust isn’t easy, and it’s not like you can just flip a switch and suddenly start trusting others. It takes work, and it takes a lot of self-love and self-respect.
As I’ve learned how to love myself, I’ve also learned how to trust. Once I actually believed that I deserve love and respect, I started letting myself trust others.
You have to trust yourself first, then others will follow.
As always, stay safe and stay healthy.
