This week, I was having a hard time figuring out what to write about. Every time I thought about discussing self-care, it felt so self-indulgent in a time of global crisis. Who am I to deserve time to take care of myself when people are dying, either from police brutality or a global pandemic?
Then it hit me. Right now, the best way I can take care of myself is to survive. At this point in history, humanity is fighting to stay alive and stay healthy. We are fighting for survival, and every person counts.
Hamilton County is currently a hot-spot for COVID-19, so it’s up to all of us to do what we can to take care of not only ourselves but one another, too. We need to protect our most vulnerable loved ones and neighbors, even if that means sacrificing the things we want to do. In a few days, Hamilton County will be requiring face coverings in any public space. I know it’s not the most comfortable thing in the world, but I also know just wearing a mask could literally save a life.
I also know that with there being a major national holiday this week, many people have been tempted to forgo the practices we’ve gotten used to over the past few months. Barbecues and pool parties with friends sound incredible right now, but I decided to cancel my 4th of July plans in favor of protecting those that I love.
Right now, sacrifice and selflessness are how I’m practicing self-care. If I were to do whatever I want, like go to social gatherings, I know I’d feel guilty later for putting my family, my friends, my job, and my own health at risk. What the world needs at this moment is more important than what I want as an individual, and doing my civic duty feels a lot better than endangering everyone I know.
Stay healthy, stay safe. And stay 6 feet apart.
Xo,
