Take Emotional Inventory

When’s the last time you checked in with yourself? I know I don’t do it often enough.

While on my self-care and self-love journey, I’ve been working on being more in tune with my emotions. That means checking in with my feelings and seeing where I’m at mentally, which isn’t always easy.

I’ve recently started using a scale to see how I’m feeling so I can make adjustments when needed. A while back, I saw a tiktok that asked three questions: how has your week gone, how are you feeling today, and what is your emotional capacity to handle the rest of the day? Each question is rated on a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the best and 1 being the worst.

Since seeing that tiktok, I’ve been trying to check in with myself at least a few times a week, ideally every morning. Taking emotional inventory like this has opened my eyes to what I’m capable of and what I’m not, and it’s made me more self-aware. Today, for example, I know my week has been about a 6, my day so far is about a 4, but my capacity to take on the rest of the day is about a 9. Answering each of these questions gives me a more holistic look at how I’m doing, and it reminds me that just because a day starts off poorly doesn’t mean it has to end that way.

This week, I encourage you all to check in with yourselves. Take that emotional inventory and try to recognize your own mental and emotional capacity. If you’re at a 1 for the last question, go easy on yourself and take a rest day. If you’re at a 10, go ahead and tackle that project you’ve been wanting to start. Just recognize where you are and what you’re capable of.

As always, stay safe + stay healthy.
