Despite the Sadness, Seek Out Moments of Joy

2020 has certainly been a difficult year. A sad year. A year full of grief on many levels. A year full of uncertainty. At the end of 2019, no one could have predicted that 2020 would be going the way that it is. So many things have happened in such a short amount of time. Time has flown by faster than any year I remember, despite being in lockdown, and living with precautions. Somehow, bad thing after bad thing continues to happen. With so much bad around us, it can feel really difficult to find the good.

But I want to encourage you to pause and remember what brings you light and joy. I want you to know that it is okay to grieve the things you missed out on this year. And it’s okay to grieve the loss of people that you have never even met.

I want you to feel your feelings, but I also want you to pause and truly think about the good things that have happened in your life this year, no matter how small. For me, I had some momentous good things, despite the chaos – my mom’s scans after a tough year of battling pancreatic cancer came back clear so we celebrated her being cancer-free, I got married on the most beautiful day, at my childhood home, to my best friend, and I am back to speaking consistently, which is what I love to do. But maybe you haven’t had such big wins, and that’s okay. Maybe you took a walk to your favorite place this summer, highlight that, or maybe you got to try out a new meal you have been craving, or you finally learned how to knit with all your free time, or picked up some other skill, or you took an online course, or you simply slept in a lot more than normal. Highlight those moments!

Those are all really great things, despite the bad in our world. Unfortunately, bad things will continue to happen all around us, but if we can stay grounded in even the smallest good things that happen to us, we can continue to challenge ourselves to move forward with positivity. And if we can move forward with positivity, no matter what life brings our way, we can stay grounded in what makes us feel good and what brings us light. And we can come back to those small moments of joy, even in a world that feels dark, we can find the light. What moment of 2020 made you smile? Whatever it might have been, from you being able to touch your toes, to watching a funny video, hold onto those moments that gave you joy. In these tough times, we can cling to those joyous moments, and that gives us the strength to carry on.

Xo,
